FAQ's About Oldoinyo Lengai Hiking

Why is Ol Doinyo Lengai called the “Mountain of God”?
Ol Doinyo Lengai is called the “Mountain of God” by the Maasai people, who regard it as a sacred place. According to Maasai tradition, it is the dwelling place of their god, Enkai. The mountain’s powerful eruptions, unique black lava, and towering presence reinforce its spiritual significance. Many Maasai believe the eruptions symbolize communication between the divine and the earthly. Climbers and visitors often respect these beliefs, making the trek both a natural and cultural experience.

Ol Doinyo Lengai produces the world’s only carbonatite lava, which is extremely rare. Unlike the bright red molten rock seen in other volcanoes, its lava appears black or brown and is relatively cool, flowing at just about 500–600°C. This unusual composition allows the lava to move quickly, harden fast, and sometimes appear like mud. Over time, it weathers into white, chalky deposits, creating a dramatic contrast against the dark volcanic landscape. This phenomenon attracts geologists and curious adventurers worldwide.

Climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai is considered challenging due to its steep slopes, loose volcanic ash, and rugged terrain. The trek usually begins at midnight, allowing climbers to reach the summit by sunrise when temperatures are cooler and the views are spectacular. The climb requires good fitness, determination, and a local guide. Despite its difficulty, reaching the summit rewards adventurers with breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Natron, and sometimes even active steaming craters.

The best time to climb Ol Doinyo Lengai is during the dry seasons, from June to October and December to February. These months offer clearer skies, less rainfall, and safer trail conditions. The dry climate also ensures better visibility of Lake Natron, the Rift Valley, and surrounding mountains. Climbing during the rainy season is difficult due to slippery paths and clouded views. Early morning treks are most recommended, as daytime heat makes the climb more exhausting.

The area surrounding Ol Doinyo Lengai, especially near Lake Natron, is rich in wildlife. Visitors can spot flocks of flamingos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and gazelles grazing on the plains. Predators like hyenas and jackals also roam the area. Birdlife is particularly impressive, with species adapted to the alkaline environment of Lake Natron. Though the volcanic mountain itself is barren, the nearby ecosystem offers a vibrant safari-like experience, combining hiking with an opportunity to witness East Africa’s diverse wildlife.
