Mount Meru

Overview

Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania and one of the most spectacular trekking peaks in East Africa. Located inside Arusha National Park, the mountain rises dramatically above the surrounding savannah and forests, offering incredible wildlife encounters and breathtaking views.

  • Location: Northeastern Tanzania, about 70 km west of Mount Kilimanjaro

  • Mountain Type: Dormant stratovolcano

  • Last Minor Activity: Around 1910

  • Rank: 5th highest mountain in Africa

Mount Meru is often used by climbers as an acclimatization trek before climbing Kilimanjaro.

🌍 Geography & Landscape

Mount Meru formed after a massive volcanic eruption that created a huge horseshoe-shaped crater on the eastern side of the mountain.

Key features include:

  • Ash Cone: Located inside the crater

  • Crater Rim: Narrow ridge leading to the summit

  • Momella Lakes: Beautiful alkaline lakes at the base

  • Ngurdoto Crater: Sometimes called “Little Ngorongoro”

From the summit, climbers can see Mount Kilimanjaro floating above the clouds at sunrise.

🌿 Ecosystems (Nature Zones)

The mountain has several ecological zones as you climb:

  1. Savannah Grassland (1,500–2,000 m)
    Zebras, giraffes, buffalo, and antelope.

  2. Montane Forest (2,000–2,800 m)
    Dense rainforest with colobus monkeys and birds.

  3. Heather & Moorland (2,800–4,000 m)
    Giant lobelias, heathers, and unique alpine plants.

  4. Alpine Desert (4,000+ m)
    Rocky terrain and dramatic volcanic landscape.

Standard Itinerary:

  • Day 1: Momella Gate → Miriakamba Hut

  • Day 2: Miriakamba Hut → Saddle Hut

  • Day 3: Summit attempt to Socialist Peak (4,566 m)

  • Day 4: Descend to Momella Gate
